Welcome to the Blog

I’ve been an old house lover for years.  In 2003 I bought a victorian flat in San Francisco and spent five years remodeling it.  Most of my weekends were spent tearing old things out and putting new things back in.  After finishing the work on my perfect bachelor pad, I enjoyed it for one year before moving and renting it out.  Time passed and I started new adventures.  I got  married, we had a son, and sold that 800 sq. ft. Victorian flat to buy a 4000 sq. ft. pre-revolution colonial tavern with a barn.  In addition to more square footage, I also bought 260 years of history, craftsmanship, and family memories.

This new (to me) property has had several names over the years, but is currently known as the Crocker Tavern House, and it is my new obsession.  It was a meeting place for the Whigs before the American Revolution, and it’s believed patriots such as James Otis and George Washington spent time there.  A historic home such as this should never get the gut-and-replace treatment I gave to the San Francisco house- it should be restored with minimal  remodeling.  The tavern house was lovingly restored back in the ’80’s, but after 30 years there is deferred maintenance and other work needed.

The beauty of these old homes is usually the main reason someone falls in love with them.  However, there are many more reasons to love with an old house.  When we spend time in these homes, we experience so much more than amazing design and craftsmanship.  These antique homes preserve our American heritage, family memories, and values- even after modern, fashionable opinions have thrown these things out.  It is my sincere hope that sharing my love of this house, antique homes, and history will also convey an appreciation of those values.
